When I started Ambassador Steel in 1974, I didn’t realize how unprepared I was to serve as a leader. The challenges I faced as a “new” leader dramatically altered my understanding of success. I realized that leadership is most effective when it is granted rather than demanded – and that true success is measured in strong relationships, not just professional accomplishments. My continuing growth in this area helped Ambassador Steel become the largest independent distributor and fabricator of rebar in the United States with annual revenues surpassing $500 million.
After selling Ambassador Steel in 2008, I focused my efforts on Ambassador Enterprises. Using the principles of the engage! experience, my team and I are developing deeper relationships and a more rewarding work environment. Through the engage! experience, our hope is to give other leaders the practical “how’s” of effective, relationship-based leadership.
